Synopsis:

A young Andalusian shepherd named Santiago often dreams of a child informing him to seek his treasure in Egypt, near the Pyramids. When the young shepherd consults a gypsy woman to find the meaning of the dream, the woman tells him to go to Egypt and give her a certain amount of money when he finds his treasure. Santiago assumes the gypsy woman to be a teller of les and ignores her advice. But, when an old king advices the boy to sell his sheep and use the money to the journey of Egypt and hands him two fortune telling stones named Urim and Thummim. Santiago starts his journey and when he arrives to Tangier, a thief robs his money. That makes the boy work in a crystal shop to get money to return home or continue his journey.

After spending a year in the crystal shop, the boy decides to continue his journey.He joins a caravan crossing the Sahara dessert where he meets an English man who has a desire to become an Alchemist and was in search of an Alchemist. Suddenly, the caravan had to stop it’s journey due to a tribal war which was taking place in the dessert. One day the boy finds an omen of an attack in the dessert and delivers the message to the tribe leaders and the tribe chiefs get to defend their tribe. The Alchemist whom the English man was in search of got the vision of the boy’s vision and meets him. It is the Alchemist who assists the young shepherd throughout his journey to Egypt.

On their journey a group of men capture them and to save their lives, the Alchemist hands their money over to the men and informs them that the young shepherd could turns himself into a wind. Santiago feels alarmed as he was not able to turn himself into a wind. The young shepherd starts to pray and a storm appears hiding the boy. The group of men believe it was the boy who turned himself to a wind and let the Alchemist and the young boy go. The Alchemist accompanies him to Egypt and leaves the young boy after giving him some gold. When the young shepherd begins to dig near the foot of the pyramid, a group of men beats him for money. When the young boy declared about his dream to the men. they leave the young boy alone assuming that he has no money with him. But before leaving the place a man relates his dream about a treasure buried in an abandoned church in Spain where a sycamore tree grows. It was the same place where the young Shepherd had his dream. The boy understands where the treasure is and returns to Spain and finds his treasure.

Review:

Alchemist is the perfect book to ones who are in search of their dreams to attain it. We often disregard our dreams assuming that they won’t come true or believing them merely our cloud of thoughts and likes which appear in our sleep. The book Alchemist and the author Paulo Coelho proves the notion wrong. Dreams are things which we should be keen of. Dreams should be considered than regretted. There are such dreams with deeper meaning which we cannot identify and let go due to lack of understanding or carelessness.

The story is of the journey of a shepherd boy from Andalusia towards his dream. The barriers and inconveniences he faces to reach his destination and the way he he faces them is an inspiration to every readers. There are times in which the boy would try to give up but the repeated words of the old king would keep him move on and succeed. The story teaches us that never would learning a new found language or work would go wasted. Wherever our life takes us, we have something new to learn and experience. We just have to notice it.

Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian novelist and lyricist. The author has written many famous book and is well known for The Alchemist which was published in 1988. It was his second published book and the first book published by the Author was The Pilgrimage on 1987. Paulo Coelho was admitted in the mental asylum by his parents when he was a teenager. Then he was enrolled in a law school which he dropped out and became a Hippie. The Author was a journalist, actor, lyricist and a theatre director before he become a writer. The book Hippie is a Biographical fiction of his story and was published in 2018.
